The Kenites

A small people living among and alongside Israel, addressed in the fifth of Balaam's oracles at Numbers 24:21-22. Moses' father-in-law is identified as a Kenite in Judges 1:16, and Jael, who kills Sisera, is a Kenite woman — so they sit inside Israel's story without being Israel. ⭐ The oracle puns on their name: ha-Qeini, the Kenite, and qen, a nest, are the same two consonants, and v22 calls the nation Kain, the name of Cain. ⚠ The prophecy is the least fulfilled-looking in the chapter: Asshur (Assyria) did eventually deport populations across this region, but no text records the end of the Kenites, and they simply stop being mentioned.
