Moses' military commander and eventual successor, introduced here with no genealogy and no backstory — already trusted to choose men and lead them against Amalek while Moses climbs a hill (Exodus 17:9-13). ⚠ His name at this point is likely still HOSHEA, 'he saves'; Moses renames him YEHOSHUA, folding in the divine name, only later (Numbers 13:16) — the same root that gives, through Greek, the name JESUS. He becomes Moses' personal attendant (Exodus 24:13; 33:11), one of only two of the twelve spies to bring back a good report of the land (Numbers 13-14), and is commissioned as Moses' successor before Moses dies (Deuteronomy 31; Joshua 1) — leading the conquest that gives his own book its name.
