The witness sent ahead of Jesus, baptizing at the Jordan. He denies being the Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet, calls himself only 'a voice crying in the wilderness' (Isaiah 40:3), and points his own disciples to 'the Lamb of God.' (The Gospel of John never names its own author, so every 'John' in this book is the Baptist.)
