John son of Zebedee

The fisherman brother of JAMES, called with him from Zebedee's boat (Matthew 4:21), and one of the inner three. ⚠ He is NOT John the Baptist, who is the 'John' of Matthew 3 and of 4:12 — a collision this library handles by giving each entry its own verses rather than letting either claim the bare name. Tradition, from Irenaeus onward, identifies him with 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' in the Fourth Gospel, and so with the author of that Gospel, of the three letters of John, and (more disputed) of Revelation; the Gospel itself never names him, which is either modesty or a sign that the identification is later inference. Paul lists him among the 'pillars' at Jerusalem (Galatians 2:9), and Acts pairs him almost silently with Peter through the early chapters. He is remembered as the one apostle who was not martyred, dying old at Ephesus.
