The mother of Aaron, Moses and Miriam, named at Numbers 26:59 in the middle of the Levite genealogy: Jochebed daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt. ⚠ Exodus 6:20 names her too, but this is the verse that places her — a generation and a country in one clause. ⭐ Read carefully, this verse does not SAY the thing it is usually cited for: making her a daughter of Levi makes her Kohath's sister and therefore Amram's aunt, but the relationship is left to the genealogy to imply. It is Exodus 6:20 that states it outright — Amram took Jochebed his father's sister to wife — a marriage Leviticus 18:12 later forbids. Both verses report the descent and neither remarks on the difficulty, and this translation does the same. Her name contains the divine name, one of the earliest Israelite names to do so.
