The priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, who gives him his daughter Zipporah (Exodus 2:16-21). He is named REUEL here ('friend of God,' 2:18) and JETHRO in the following chapters (3:1; 18) — the standing puzzle of two names. The oldest solutions still hold: Reuel is the personal name and Jethro (Yitro, from yeter, 'abundance, excellence') a title or honorific ('his excellency'); or Reuel is the clan-grandfather and Jethro the working head of the house. (A third name, Hobab, appears too, Numbers 10:29 / Judges 4:11, sometimes read as Reuel's son and Moses' brother-in-law.) In Exodus 18 Jethro returns to Moses at Sinai, offers sacrifice to Jehovah — 'Now I know that Jehovah is greater than all gods' — and gives Moses the shrewd counsel to appoint judges and delegate, the Bible's first management lesson. A Midianite priest who worships Israel's God: one of scripture's quiet witnesses that the knowledge of the true God was not sealed inside Israel alone.
