Jesus of Nazareth, son of Joseph — the Word made flesh (1:14). Hailed by the Baptist as 'the Lamb of God' and 'the Chosen One of God,' and confessed by Nathanael as 'Son of God' and 'King of Israel'; he names himself 'the Son of Man' (1:51). In Revelation's opening vision he is 'the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth' (Rev 1:5) — one like a son of man among the lampstands, wearing the Ancient of Days' own description, who says 'I am the first and the last... and I was dead, and look: I am alive forever' (Rev 1:13-18).
