King of Israel for forty-one years (roughly 793-753 BC) and the ruler under whom Amos and Hosea both preached. 2 Kings 14:23-29 gives him four verses: he did what was evil, and he restored the borders of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the Sea of the Arabah — the largest the northern kingdom ever was. That combination is the whole setting of Amos: a rich, expanding, militarily successful country being told it is finished. ⚠ Not to be confused with JEROBOAM SON OF NEBAT, the very different king who split the kingdom two centuries earlier and set up the calves at Bethel and Dan; this one is his distant successor, and the Bible distinguishes them only by patronymic — 'son of Joash'.
