Called here ‘son of Manasseh’ — though 1 Chronicles 2:21-23 (not yet on these pages) traces a Jair connected to this same region through a very different and more distant line, by marriage into Machir’s clan from the tribe of Judah (Hezron of Judah married a daughter of Machir; their great-grandson was named Jair), and that genealogy explicitly credits him with the identical place-name, closing by calling the whole line ‘the sons of Machir the father of Gilead’. The two accounts are not straightforwardly reconciled, and ‘son of Manasseh’ at Numbers 32:41 is likely the same broad, generations-spanning idiom the chapter already uses of Machir himself. ⭐ He captures a cluster of unwalled tent-villages in Gilead and renames them HAVVOTH-JAIR — literally ‘the tent-villages of Jair’ — a name that outlives him by centuries: Deuteronomy 3:14, Joshua 13:30 and Judges 10:3-4 (none yet on these pages) all still call the same district by his name, the last of them for an entirely different Jair, a much later judge of Israel with thirty sons of his own riding thirty donkeys through thirty towns — the identical place-name attached to two men who may share nothing but it.
