The well where the conversation of John 4 takes place — and one of the very few sites in the Gospels whose location has never seriously been in doubt, because the well is still there and still yields water. It is cut through rock to a depth of about 40 metres, which is why the woman's 'you have no bucket, and the well is deep' (4:11) is a practical objection rather than a symbolic one. The Hebrew Bible never actually calls it Jacob's, though Genesis 33:19 has Jacob buying the ground. A church has stood over it on and off since the fourth century; the present one is Greek Orthodox.
