Aaron's fourth and youngest son, and Eleazar's brother — the two who survived Nadab and Abihu's death by strange fire (Leviticus 10:1-2; Numbers 3:4, both already on these pages). Where Eleazar is set over the Kohathites and their lethal cargo of holiest furniture, Ithamar supervises the two Levite clans whose work carries no such danger: Gershon's curtains and coverings, and Merari's frames and pillars (Numbers 4:28, 33). The division is a quiet demonstration of how this chapter organizes risk — the more dangerous the cargo, the more senior the priest assigned to oversee it. Ithamar's own descendants later produce the priestly line of Eli (1 Samuel, not yet on these pages), a line that in turn loses the high priesthood back to Eleazar's own line under Solomon.
