Jacob’s ninth son and Leah’s fifth, named for a wage: God has given my hire, sekhari, Leah says at Genesis 30:18 (already on these pages), because she had given her maid to her husband — and the birth itself was bought, a night with Jacob traded from Rachel for her son’s mandrakes (30:14–16). ⭐ Jacob’s deathbed oracle makes him a bony donkey crouching between the saddlebags, who saw that rest was good and the land was pleasant, and bent his shoulder to bear, and became a slave at forced labour (Genesis 49:14–15, already on these pages) — the one son whose blessing is a life of carrying. ⚠ At Deuteronomy 27:12 he is the fourth of the six tribes stationed on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, with the other sons of Leah and Rachel; the tribe’s later land is the Jezreel valley, the flat farmland the oracle’s donkey seems to have in view.
