Isaac

Yitschaq, 'he laughs' — named by God before he is conceived, from Abraham's own face-down laugh (17:17-19), and given the first hard date on the promise: 'at this appointed time next year' (17:21). The covenant's appointed heir — 'my covenant I will establish with Isaac' — announced a chapter before Sarah herself hears of it. Born in Genesis 21; Beer-lahai-roi, Hagar's well, will later be his home (24:62; 25:11). He dies at 180, 'old and full of days,' at Hebron, and is buried in the cave of Machpelah by his two sons — Esau and Jacob together (35:27-29).
