Ha-kohen ha-gadol, literally THE GREAT PRIEST — the office Aaron held first and his line after him, distinguished from the ordinary priesthood by the anointing with the holy oil and by the Day of Atonement, which only he performs (Leviticus 16, already on these pages). ⭐ Numbers 35 gives him a role nothing else in the Torah gives him: his DEATH, and nothing else, releases the accidental killer from his city of refuge (vv25, 28, 32). The chapter never explains the connection — it mentions the anointing and stops — and this project does not vote on what it means, only notes what the chapter sets side by side: the man whose office is to make atonement, and a law eight verses later saying that for bloodshed there is no atonement except blood. ⚠ The title is not stable even inside that chapter: vv25 and 28 read ha-kohen ha-gadol, and v32 reads simply ha-kohen, the priest. Only three of the thirteen versions on this project’s two shelves keep the shorter form — the KJV, the ASV and the RV 1909, whose own 1960 revision supplies «sumo».
