A stopping-place on the wilderness itinerary, one march past Kibroth-hattaavah — the camp Israel reaches at the end of Numbers 11 and leaves at the end of Numbers 12, so the whole of Miriam's confrontation with Moses, her seven days shut outside the camp, and the week the nation spent waiting for her all happen here. The name means something like 'enclosures' or 'courtyards', the ordinary word for a walled settlement's yards, which suggests a place with water and some permanence rather than a bare halt. ⚠ It is traditionally identified with 'Ain Khadra, a spring in the eastern Sinai roughly forty miles north-east of Mount Sinai's traditional site — an identification that rests largely on the resemblance of the names, and is not secure.
