Caravan city on the northern arc of the route from Ur to Canaan, where Terah's migration stalls and Terah dies (11:31-32); Abram's call comes here (12:1-4). Like Ur, it was a great cult center of the moon god (Sin) — the shared devotion is the usual explanation for why the family settled here (the Bible recalls that Terah 'served other gods,' Joshua 24:2). Babylon's last king Nabonidus later restored its moon-temple, and David Storm Rice's 1950s excavation of Harran's Great Mosque recovered the inscriptions that name the site. Spelled differently in Hebrew from Terah's son Haran, whose death at 11:28 happens before the family even leaves Ur for this place.
