Daniel's three companions from Judah — 'Yah has been gracious,' 'who is what El is?', 'Yah has helped' — renamed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego by the empire (1:7; each new name smuggles in a Babylonian god, Nebo's apparently garbled to 'Nego'). They share the vegetable test and the ten-hands verdict (1:19-20); their own hour, the furnace, comes in chapter 3.
