He comes to Jacob as a smooth negotiator, proposing that the two peoples intermarry, trade, and 'become one people' (34:8-10), and sells the bargain to his own townsmen not by appeal to justice but to greed: 'their livestock and property — will they not be ours?' (34:23). He and his son are the first to fall to Simeon and Levi's swords (34:26). Long after, Jacob's purchase of a field 'from the sons of Hamor' (33:19) becomes Joseph's grave (Joshua 24:32) — the one patch of Shechem that stays Israel's by right, not by the sword.
