Sarai's Egyptian slave-girl, given to Abram as a surrogate (16:1-3). When she flees, the angel of Jehovah — the Bible's first — finds her on the desert road home to Egypt: she is the first person in the Bible he visits, the only woman in Genesis to receive the offspring-beyond-counting promise from God directly (16:10), and the only person in the Bible who confers a name on God — El Ro'i, 'the God who sees me' (16:13). Her story resumes in Genesis 21.
