The Mediterranean — the western edge of the land in Numbers 34:6-7, and the only one of Canaan’s four borders that needed no surveying. ⭐ Hebrew calls it ha-yam ha-gadol, ‘the great sea’, and calls the DIRECTION by the same word: yam means both ‘sea’ and ‘west’, because the sea is what lies west of anyone standing in Canaan. So v6 in Hebrew says sea-border, sea, sea-border — and every version on both shelves prints ‘west’ and the collision vanishes. ⚠ The NIV and the Living Bible go further and print ‘the Mediterranean Sea’ outright, so a reader always knows where they are and never learns what the text called it. ⚠ Joshua 1:4, already on these pages, names the same water from the other end of the compass: mevo ha-shemesh, ‘the going-in of the sun’. The coordinates here are a point off the Canaanite coast; a sea has no pin.
