That verse locates Gerizim and Ebal 'opposite Gilgal' — but the Jordan-crossing Gilgal lies near Jericho, some fifty kilometres south of Shechem, and no mountain near Shechem is visible from it. Two explanations stand and neither is provable: a SECOND Gilgal nearer Shechem (the name is a common noun and more than one place carries it in the Hebrew Bible), or a writer orienting a distant reader by the best-known landmark rather than the nearest one.
