A MAN, not the territory — son of Machir, grandson of Manasseh, and ancestor of the Gileadite clan: ‘Machir fathered Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites’ (Numbers 26:29, already on these pages). His descendants are the men who appeal against the Zelophehad ruling in Numbers 36:1, and Zelophehad is his grandson. ⚠ He shares his name with the hill country east of the Jordan, and the two are separate entries here on purpose.
