The eldest of Levi's three sons, and ancestor of the Gershonites — the Levite clan charged with the tabernacle's soft architecture: its coverings, curtains, and screens, the fabric that gave the tent its actual shape (Numbers 3:25-26, already on these pages). Despite Gershon's own seniority among Levi's sons, his clan's duty is lighter than Kohath's — the coverings, not the holiest vessels — and his clan camped on the tabernacle's west side, the 'seaward' direction this project has already tracked from Numbers 2's own camp standards.
