Moses' firstborn son by Zipporah, named at his birth for the condition of his father's exile: 'I have been a sojourner in a foreign land' (Exodus 2:22, ger being the Hebrew for sojourner/resident-alien). ⚠ He is a child mentioned twice and never once given a word of his own — circumcised in the strange, violent scene at the inn on the road back to Egypt (4:24-26, where the text does not even specify which son), then brought back to his father at Sinai by his grandfather Jethro along with his younger brother Eliezer (18:2-6). A Levite genealogy centuries later (1 Chronicles 23:14-16) lists his own son Shebuel among the Levitical officials, the only trace of a line continuing after him.
