A town of the western Negev borderland, on the road between Canaan and Egypt — where Abraham 'sojourns' (gur, 20:1; the name nearly rhymes with the verb) and replays the sister-ruse on king Abimelech. Isaac will repeat both the sojourn and the ruse here (ch. 26). Usually identified with Tel Haror (Tell Abu Hureira) in the Nahal Gerar valley.
