Isaac and Rebekah's firstborn twin — born 'ruddy (admoni), all over like a hairy mantle,' so they called him ESAU; and because he traded his birthright for a bowl of RED (adom) stew, he earned the second name EDOM (25:25, 30). A man of the open field, a hunter, his father's favorite for the game he brought home — and the one who 'despised his birthright' (25:34), selling the eternal for a single meal, which is why the New Testament makes him the type of the 'profane' person (Hebrews 12:16). Jacob will later cheat him of the blessing too (ch. 27), and Esau's murderous grief drives Jacob into exile; yet at their reunion Esau runs to embrace him and weeps (ch. 33), the wronged brother more gracious than the schemer. He is the father of EDOM, Israel's perennial neighbor and rival to the south.
