The Tishbite — the prophet who arrives in 1 Kings 17 with no introduction, no father named and no call narrative, announces a drought, and dominates the rest of the book. He is fed by ravens, raises a widow's son, faces down the prophets of Baal on Carmel, then runs from Jezebel into the wilderness and asks to die, and hears God not in wind, earthquake or fire but in a thin whisper of silence. Recognizable by a hair garment and a leather belt (2 Kings 1:8) — the costume John the Baptist wears as a claim. He does not die: a chariot of fire separates him from Elisha and he goes up in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2). Malachi ends the Old Testament promising he will come again before the great day, which is why he is expected in the Gospels, identified there with John, and appears beside Moses at the transfiguration.
