The grazing town where Joseph finally found his brothers — and was stripped, thrown into a dry cistern, and sold (37:17-28). It is a real and well-identified site: TELL DOTHAN, about thirteen miles north of Shechem, excavated by Joseph Free in the 1950s and 60s and found to have been occupied continuously through the Bronze and Iron Ages, so a Bronze-Age family pasturing flocks there fits the archaeology. Its position matters to the plot: Dothan sits on the caravan route running from Gilead across the plain toward the coast road and Egypt — which is precisely why a spice caravan bound for Egypt happens past the pit (37:25). The town returns once more, and in the opposite key: it is at Dothan that Elisha's terrified servant wakes to find the hills around them full of horses and chariots of fire (2 Kings 6:13-17). Same town; the other kind of morning.
