Jacob and Leah's daughter — the one daughter the family record names, and the still center of Genesis 34's storm. She 'goes out to see the daughters of the land' and is seized and violated by Shechem, the prince of the town (34:2); her full brothers Simeon and Levi answer by putting the whole city to the sword. Through the entire chapter Dinah never speaks and is never asked — the men negotiate, deceive, and kill over her in silence, and the narrator lets that silence indict them. Her name (from din, 'judgment') hangs over a chapter that withholds its verdict until Jacob's deathbed curse of her avengers (49:5-7). She is listed among those who go down to Egypt (46:15), then passes from the story.
