A city in the hills south-west of Hebron, the last taken in the southern campaign: Joshua turned back to it and did to it and its king as he had done to Hebron and Libnah (Joshua 10:38–39, now on these pages). Its older name was Kiriath-sepher, and Judges 1:11–13 (already on these pages), set after Joshua’s death, tells how Othniel captured it and won Caleb’s daughter Achsah as his wife. ⚠ Not the king of Eglon called Debir in Joshua 10:3: the man and the city share a name. Its site is disputed; Khirbet Rabud, south-west of Hebron, is one proposal.
