The large eastern Mediterranean island that is Barnabas's own home (Acts 4:36, not yet on these pages) and, with Paul, the first stop of their first missionary journey (Acts 13:4, not yet on these pages), where the Roman governor Sergius Paulus believes after a magician opposing them is struck blind. Its copper mines gave the ancient world much of its supply of the metal — the very word ‘copper’ descends from ‘Cyprus,’ via Latin cuprum — and its position athwart the sea lanes between Syria, Asia Minor and Egypt made it a natural first landfall for a mission launched out of Antioch. When Barnabas and Paul part ways in this chapter, Barnabas sails home to it, and Acts never follows him there.
