The Midianite woman killed alongside Zimri, named at Numbers 25:15 as the daughter of Zur, a head of a father's house in Midian — so, like the man, from the top of her people. ⭐ Her name shares its consonants with kazav, to LIE or deceive, the root behind 'a false witness' in Proverbs and behind Delilah's accusation that Samson had lied to her. Whether the name is Midianite and the resemblance accidental cannot be settled — but v18, four verses later, says the Midianites BEGUILED Israel with their WILES, and the two are hard to read apart. ⚠ Every version on both shelves transliterates the name, which is the right call and costs the sound. v18 also calls her the Midianites' SISTER, a kinship word that makes the whole nation liable for her and turns a killing into a war. ⚠ A king named Zur dies among the five kings of Midian at Numbers 31:8, six chapters later — possibly her own father, though the chapter calls him a melekh (king) rather than repeating her father's title, a rosh beit-av (head of a father's house), so the name alone cannot settle it.
