The freshwater lake the eastern border runs along in Numbers 34:11 — the Sea of Galilee, called Kinneret in Hebrew then and now. ⚠ The name is traditionally connected to kinnor, a lyre, for the shape of the water; that is an old explanation rather than a demonstrated etymology, and the lakeside town of Chinnereth may simply have given the sea its name instead. ⭐ The border does not merely touch it. It strikes its ketef — its SHOULDER, the high ground along the eastern edge — in a verb (machah) whose only three other appearances in the Hebrew Bible all mean to blot out. ⚠ The Living Bible loses the lake altogether, running vv11-12 together as ‘along the Jordan River, ending at the Dead Sea’; the NIV keeps it but renames it the Sea of Galilee.
