Not a river but the nāru kabaru, the 'Great Canal' — a major irrigation channel off the Euphrates running past the ancient city of NIPPUR in southern Mesopotamia, named in Babylonian cuneiform business documents of exactly this period. Judean deportees were settled in villages along it; tablets recovered in recent decades name one of them āl-Yāhūdu, 'Judah-town.' Ezekiel saw the chariot vision here (1:1, 1:3), and the site of it can be pointed to on a map — the glory of Jehovah appearing in the irrigation district of the empire that had carried them off.
