The Caphtorim (Caphtor)

The people who ‘came from Caphtor’ and destroyed the Avvim, settling in their place along the coast as far as Gaza (Deuteronomy 2:23) — commonly identified with the ancestors of the Philistines. ⭐ Genesis 10:14 (already on these pages) already lists the Caphtorim among the descendants of Mizraim, alongside the Casluhim, ‘from whom the Philistines came,’ without saying where Caphtor was. ⚠️ Where Caphtor itself is has never been settled: the NVI resolves it outright as Crete (‘los caftoritas procedentes de Creta’), while the Douay-Rheims, following the Vulgate, reads ‘Cappadocians… who came out of Cappadocia’ — a location on the opposite side of the Aegean and Anatolia from Crete. This translation keeps the name transliterated and reports both identifications.
