The chief city of northern EDOM, and the one the prophets name when they mean Edom's power: Amos burns its citadels (1:12), Jeremiah 49:13 makes it 'a desolation, a reproach, a waste', and Isaiah 63:1 has a figure coming from Bozrah 'with garments dyed red'. It is one of the eight royal seats listed in the Edomite king-list of Genesis 36:33. Identified with BUSEIRAH in southern Jordan, excavated in the 1970s and found to be exactly what the oracles assume — a fortified administrative centre on a spur, with a large public building complex.
