A village on the Mount of Olives, between Bethany and Jerusalem on the road down from the summit — named only for this one scene in the shared Gospel tradition (Matthew 21:1; Luke 19:29, not yet on these pages) and nowhere else in the Bible. ⚠ Its name is Aramaic, beth paggē, 'house of unripe figs' — pagga is the word for a fig too green to be fully ripe, the same class of fruit Song of Songs 2:13 (not yet on these pages) pictures a fig tree putting out before its leaves are done unfolding. Mark does not comment on the name, but the village Jesus and the twelve pass through on their way into Jerusalem is named, in Aramaic, after the one thing the fig tree two verses later conspicuously fails to produce. Its exact site is not fixed archaeologically; the tradition kept since at least the medieval period, now marked by a Franciscan church, sits on the eastern shoulder of the ridge.
