'Well of the seven / well of the oath' — the double-named well where Abraham and Abimelech swore over seven ewe-lambs (21:28-31; Hebrew 'to swear,' nishba, is literally 'to seven oneself,' so the two readings are one word). Abraham plants a tamarisk here and calls on El Olam, the Everlasting God (21:33); Isaac and Jacob will both anchor here after him, and 'from Dan to Beersheba' becomes the Bible's own phrase for the whole land, north to south. The excavated tell (Tel Be'er Sheva) preserves an Iron-Age planned town with a monumental well at its gate — a city built around exactly the asset this chapter litigates.
