Beeroth

‘Wells’ — one of the four towns of the Gibeonite league (Joshua 9:17, now on these pages). It is later reckoned to Benjamin (Joshua 18:25), and 2 Samuel 4:2 says so in as many words — for Beeroth also is reckoned to Benjamin — while introducing two men of Beeroth, Rechab and Baanah, who murder Saul’s son Ish-bosheth; the next verse adds that the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and have been sojourners there until this day. Readers have connected that flight with Saul’s campaign against the Gibeonites that 2 Samuel 21:2 records; the text does not say. Joab’s armour-bearer Naharai was a Beerothite too (2 Samuel 23:37; none of these yet on these pages). ⚠ Not to be confused with Beeroth-bene-jaakan, ‘the wells of the sons of Jaakan’, a stop in the wilderness (Deuteronomy 10:6, already on these pages). ⚠ Its site is not settled, and no ruin is known for certain to be it. Edward Robinson’s nineteenth-century identification with el-Bireh, beside Ramallah, has given way to Khirbet el-Burj near Beit Iksa, which is the point plotted here, marked approximate; Eusebius’s distances put it between Biddu and Nebi Samwil, close to Gibeon.
