'The well of the Living One who sees me' — the desert spring where the angel found Hagar, its name minted from her own sentence (16:13-14). Fixed 'between Kadesh and Bered,' but Bered appears nowhere else, so the spot is lost to the map. Isaac — the son who will displace Ishmael — later arrives from, and settles beside, this same well (24:62; 25:11).
