A town of the Shephelah on a hill above the upper Valley of Elah. The rout from Gibeon ran down the Beth-horon road as far as Azekah, and the hail fell on the fleeing army all the way there (Joshua 10:10–11, now on these pages). The Philistines camp between Socoh and Azekah before Goliath comes out (1 Samuel 17:1), and Jeremiah names Lachish and Azekah as the last fortified cities of Judah still holding out against Babylon (Jeremiah 34:7; neither yet on these pages).
