A Jew of ALEXANDRIA, 'an eloquent man, mighty in the scriptures' (Acts 18:24), who arrived in Ephesus knowing only the baptism of John and was taken aside and taught more accurately by Priscilla and Aquila — a tradesman couple, and the woman named first. He then went on to Achaia and became so effective in Corinth that a party formed around him. ⚠ Paul's handling of him is the quiet lesson of the letter: no criticism of Apollos anywhere, only of the people using his name ('I planted, Apollos watered, but God kept making it grow', 3:6), and at 16:12 Paul says he 'strongly urged' Apollos to visit them and Apollos declined. Alexandria's Jewish schools were famous for allegorical exegesis, which may be why an Alexandrian preacher went down so well in a congregation with an appetite for higher wisdom. Luther guessed he wrote Hebrews; there is no evidence either way.
