The people of unusual height living around Hebron when the scouts arrive — Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai are named (Numbers 13:22). The name is built on anaq, a NECK or a necklace, which has produced two explanations: that they were long-necked, and a rabbinic one that the sun seemed draped around their necks because of their height (Sotah 34b). ⚠ The scouts link them to the Nephilim — 'the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim' (13:33) — the only place in the Bible the two are connected, and the connecting phrase is spoken by the men bringing a bad report, not by the narrator. Hebron's other name, Kiriath-arba, is 'town of Arba', and Arba is remembered as one of them. Deuteronomy later treats the Anakim as the proverbial thing Israel was afraid of.
