Called at 75 from Haran (12:1-4): land, nation, great name, and blessing for 'all the families of the ground' — Babel's grasped-at name, given instead. Answers with altars at Shechem and Bethel; flinches into the wife-sister ruse in Egypt (12:10-20). At 99, in the covenant of circumcision, God renames him ABRAHAM — 'father of a multitude of nations' (17:5), the first person in the Bible God renames — and he laughs face-down at the promise of a son (17:17). At Mamre he feasts three visitors, then stands in the road and argues the Judge of all the earth down to ten righteous for Sodom's sake (18:22-33). At Gerar he replays Egypt's sister-ruse — and is called the Bible's first 'prophet' anyway, defined by intercession: he prays, and Abimelech's house is healed (20:7, 17).
