King of Gerar — 'my-father-is-king,' possibly a dynastic title rather than a personal name (like 'Pharaoh'; an Abimelech meets Isaac in ch. 26 too). The pagan king who argues righteousness with God at midnight ('will you kill a nation even though righteous?', 20:4 — Abraham's own courtroom word from 18:23), whose 'integrity of heart' God himself confirms, and who answers being wronged with gifts and an open invitation (20:14-15). He returns to cut a treaty with Abraham at Beersheba (21:22-34).
