REMEMBRANCE, memory, the MENTION of a name — what survives of a person when the person is gone; the noun beside zakhar, to remember. ⭐ It is God's own word for his name: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial to all generations (Exodus 3:15, already on these pages). And it is what Amalek loses: zekher Amaleq stands in two verses of the Hebrew Bible, Exodus 17:14, where Jehovah swears to blot it out, and Deuteronomy 25:19, where Israel is told to — the same sentence with the subject changed. ⚠ The Greek read the name of Amalek there, and the NIV, TLB and Douay follow it; the KJV, ASV and Geneva keep 'remembrance', the NWT 1984 'mention'.
