REMEMBER — and in Hebrew far more active than recollection: to remember is to act on. ⚠ Exodus 20:7 commands zakhor of the sabbath, but Deuteronomy 5:12 commands SHAMOR, keep or observe — the two Decalogues genuinely differ, and their reasons differ too (creation here, the exodus there). Jewish tradition holds both words were spoken in a single utterance, which the Sabbath hymn Lekhah Dodi sings as shamor ve-zakhor be-dibbur echad. That is a theological answer to a textual observation. → first discussed at Exod 20:7
