POSSESSION — a granted holding, from the root yarash, ‘to inherit’ or ‘to dispossess.’ Deuteronomy 2 turns the word into its own refrain: Jehovah refuses Israel Edom’s land because he has given Mount Seir to Esau ‘as a yerushah’ (v5); refuses Moab’s because Ar was given to the sons of Lot ‘as a yerushah’ (v9, twice); refuses Ammon’s on the identical formula (v19, twice); and then, in the very same breath (v12), applies the word to what Israel itself is about to receive.
