TO ADD — the verb of Deuteronomy 4:2's closed-canon formula: ‘you shall not ADD to the word that I am commanding you, and you shall not take away (gara) from it’ (already on these pages). ⭐ The same two verbs, in the same order, recur almost verbatim three chapters later at Deuteronomy 13:1 in the Hebrew numbering (not yet on these pages; confirmed directly against the archived Hebrew text) and close the whole Christian canon at Revelation 22:18-19 (already on these pages): whoever ADDS to the words of the prophecy has the plagues added to him, and whoever TAKES AWAY loses his share of the tree of life. A book worried about its own boundary, at both ends of the Bible. ⚠ The verbs pair a text with a fixed shape against a reader's own impulse to improve it — this project's own translation doctrine names the identical anxiety from the other direction, refusing to smooth a genuine difficulty into something easier to read. → first discussed at Deut 4:2
