TO ADD — and, in the same forms, TO DO SOMETHING AGAIN. ⭐ It is half of the pair that guards the law: Deuteronomy 4:2 and 13:1 both forbid adding to the word and taking away from it, and the two verses print that one command in different grammatical numbers — plural at 4:2, singular at 13:1 — which is why a repetition turns out to be evidence. ⚠ The second sense is what makes the verb hard to search: lo tosef can be ‘you shall not add’ or ‘you shall not do it again’, and Deuteronomy 13:12 uses exactly that second sense fifteen verses after the first — lo yosifu la’asot, they shall not do again anything like this evil thing.
